Best Time to Sell Your iPhone in Australia (2026 Guide)

Every iPhone loses value over time. The question is how much you lose by waiting too long to sell.
Timing your sale by a few weeks can mean A$100 to A$200 more in your pocket. This guide covers when to sell, what the market looks like right now, and what your iPhone is worth as a trade-in today.
Why Apple's September Launch Controls Resale Prices
Apple announces new iPhones every September. That single event shapes the Australian secondhand market more than anything else.
In the 30 days around the announcement, prices for outgoing models fell 8 to 15% as thousands of owners listed their phones at the same time. Supply goes up, buyers hold off knowing something newer is coming, and prices soften fast.
This happened in September 2025. When Apple announced the iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone 16 listings on eBay Australia and Gumtree started dropping within 48 hours, before the new phone was even available to buy. The iPhone resale value guide covers how Australian iPhone prices move across the full depreciation curve.
The Best Time to Sell: June to August
June through early August is the strongest selling window, around 4 to 6 weeks before Apple's September event.
At this point, your phone is still current, iOS support is strong, and buyers have not been tempted by what is coming next. Supply has not surged yet, and prices are at their seasonal peak.
If you are holding an iPhone 17 or iPhone 16 series right now, that window opens in June 2026, ahead of Apple's expected September 2026 announcement.
The Second Window: January to March
Post-Christmas is the next strongest period. The weeks after Boxing Day and into the New Year bring buyers into the market who received cash or gift cards over the holidays. Demand picks up, and prices stabilise after the October dip.
Black Friday in late November also creates a short spike in buyer activity, though sellers face more competition from retailers discounting new stock at the same time. Net result: Boxing Day through February is the more reliable secondary window for private sellers.
If you missed the August window, January to March is your next opportunity.
The Worst Time to Sell: September to October
October is consistently the weakest month. The new iPhone has just launched, thousands of upgraders have listed their old phones at once, and buyers are comparing it against the newest model. Prices bottom out and take 6 to 8 weeks to recover.
Current Trade-In Prices by Model (As New Condition)
These are current trade-in payouts for as-new condition at Phonebot.
Model | Storage | Trade-In Payout (As New) |
iPhone 17 Pro Max | 256GB | A$1,500 |
iPhone 17 Pro | 256GB | A$1,400 |
iPhone 17 | 256GB | A$900 |
iPhone 17 Air | 256GB | A$850 |
iPhone 16 Pro Max | 256GB | A$1,220 |
iPhone 16 | 128GB | A$750 |
Higher storage tiers return more at trade-in. A 512GB model typically adds A$50 to A$100 above the 256GB payout for the same model in the same condition. If you bought the higher storage option, factor that into your expected return.
The iPhone 17 Air stands out. It launched at A$1,799 but trades at A$850 today, below the base iPhone 17 at A$900. Weaker secondary market demand pushed its value down faster than the rest of the 17 series. If you are holding an iPhone 17 Air, selling before September 2026 is the better move.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max at A$1,500 is the strongest return in the current lineup, consistent with Pro Max models historically holding value better than any other tier.
Where to Sell: Your Options Compared
eBay Australia and Gumtree return the most, typically A$50 to A$150 above any trade-in program for the same model. The difference is time and effort: listing, photographing, managing enquiries, shipping, and dealing with buyers who pull out.
Apple Trade In is the simplest option, but it pays in store credit only, not cash, and typically returns less than the private market. It suits buyers planning an immediate upgrade through Apple directly.
Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone all run trade-in programs tied to new plan sign-ups. Payouts vary and are usually lower than those of independent trade-in services. They make sense if you are switching carriers and upgrading at the same time, but not if you just want cash for your current phone.
Phonebot trade-in gives you a cash payout, free shipping, and payment within 1 to 3 business days. If you want the sale done quickly without the effort of a private listing, trade in your iPhone and get a quote in minutes.
Does Condition Affect Timing?
Yes. The figures above are for as-new condition. Every scratch or mark reduces the payout, and wear builds up the longer you hold the phone. A device in as-new condition today will not be in as-new condition in six months.
Storage capacity and carrier lock status also affect the final payout. A carrier-locked iPhone, tied to Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone, sells for around 10 to 15% less than an unlocked equivalent on the private market. If your phone is still carrier-locked, unlocking it before listing is worth doing.
Before selling, make sure iCloud Activation Lock is turned off. Go to Settings, tap your name, select the device, and choose Remove from Account. A new owner cannot set up a phone with an active Activation Lock and will be rejected at trade-in or returned by a private buyer.
This is another reason the June to August window works. The phone is in its best condition, and the market is at its seasonal peak at the same time.
The iPhone 17e Changes the Calculation
In March 2026, Apple launched the iPhone 17e, a mid-cycle release that added a second point in the year when a new Apple product can soften prices for older models. Historically, September was the only month that mattered. Now there are two.
If Apple continues this pattern into 2027, the January to March window may weaken as a selling period. The June to August window ahead of the main September launch remains the most reliable time to sell.
