The Samsung Galaxy Note 1 was released in 2012 and it was an instant success. Samsung gambled with a big screen (5.3 inches) at the time when small screen (sub 4.5 inches) smartphones was a norm. With this additional space Samsung was also able to cram in a larger battery for a longer lasting daily experience which contributed to its initial success. At the time, this big screen phone category better known as a "phablet" was non existent and thus Samsung became the pioneer in developing and pushing this category to its limits.
The Note series came with a digital pen as well for easy note taking on your phone in your own hand writing. This was in stark contrast to the older generation (pre 2008) of smartphones which used a stylus and those Steve Jobs famously mocked at the launch of the first iPhone.
