Pixel 9 Pro Fold vs OnePlus Open: Which Fold Wins?

The original Pixel Fold made a big splash but it was far from perfect. Google seems to have spent a little bit more time perfecting its second-generation foldable, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the result. That being said, the foldable space has been heating up incredibly quickly, and OnePlus has entered the space as well with the OnePlus Open. Both phones are truly great and are easily among the best foldables on the market right now.
So, which one wins out? Let's take a look at this Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold vs OnePlus Open comparison guide.
Design and Display

The new Pixel 9 Pro introduces a more refined look compared to its predecessor. While it's slightly heavier and wider than the OnePlus Open, it has a more rectangular shape and is wider when folded.
Google opted for an aluminium frame instead of a titanium chassis just like the OnePlus foldable. Both phones have a matte finish. Although OnePlus reserves this look specifically for the Emerald Dusk color. If you go for the Crimson Shadow and Voyager Black finishes, you’ll have to make do with an eco-leather back.
The OnePlus Open is a tad bit lighter at 239 grams. It’s the perfect foldable for those who enjoy holding their phone for long stretches. Nevertheless, Google manages to edge it out with a 5.1mm thickness compared to the OnePlus Open’s 5.8mm.
Now let’s talk about the dreaded display crease. It’s an issue that plagues all foldable. There’s really no running from it. That said, both companies have made tremendous strides in addressing this. However, the OnePlus Open offers a more negligible crease in comparison. We’re definitely impressed.
Onto the display side of things, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has an 8-inch display internal screen and a 6.3-inch external display. They're both OLED panels, with the inner one having a dynamic refresh rate of between 1 and 120Hz, while the outer one ranges between 60 and 120Hz. Both screens get to a peak brightness of 2,700 nits, so they're super bright and legible.
Comparatively, the OnePlus Open features a slightly smaller 7.82-inch inner OLED display, with the same 6.31-inch cover screen. They are both LTPO 3.0 displays, meaning we can switch between 1 and 120Hz (the cover screen can switch between 10 and 120Hz). The Open can get a tad brighter as its peak brightness surpasses the Fold at 2800nits.
Camera Performance

This is where things get really interesting. Google Pixel phones are rapidly becoming synonymous with great mobile photography. So, naturally, a Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold vs OnePlus Open camera comparison is not one that we can skip.
The Pixel 9 Pro has a triple-camera array at the rear, consisting of a 48MP primary lens, a 10.8MP telephoto sensor offering an impressive 5X optical zoom, and a 10.8MP Ultrawide lens. This is not a huge update from the first-gen Pixel Fold. But you can still expect an authentic Google Pixel camera phone experience.
OnePlus foldable has its advantages too. It comes with a 48MP main camera, 48MP ultra-wide, and 64MP 3X telephoto sensor. The star of the show is the stacked sensor on the main camera, i.e., Sony's newest LYTIA-T808 sensor. It offers great low-light performance and superb dynamic range.
Performance and Software

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold runs on Google's Tensor G4 chip, optimized for AI capabilities rather than pure power. The OnePlus Open, on the other hand, has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which is among 2023's best chips. Both devices deliver smooth, snappy performance under normal use and run contemporary games well, with solid frame rates and graphics.
Looking at the specs, the Tensor G4 outperforms the Snapdragon when it comes to AI performance, but the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is better when it comes to graphical performance, i.e., gaming. That makes sense since Google prioritizes AI-driven features for the Pixel experience, while OnePlus prioritizes performance with OxygenOS.
While hardware is important, it's the software experience that really ties everything together. The Pixel 9 Pro comes with Android 14 out of the box, which introduces some welcome upgrades. Foldable software has definitely come a long way since the first Fold, but there's still some room for improvement.
In contrast, the OnePlus Open launched with Android 13 but got the Android 14 update relatively quickly. OxygenOS is not immune to foibles, but one of its great strengths is its Canvas multitasking. You can easily use floating windows and drag and drop between apps, making full use of that 7.8-inch display.
As for software support, Google's foldable will receive Android updates until 2031. The OnePlus Open only gets four years of support, two years less than its competitor.
Storage and Battery
As far as battery life is concerned, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is not the pack hero. It has the smallest battery of the Pixel 9 series and also charges the slowest. Under normal usage, it will see you through the day, but you'll need to compromise between the main 8-inch display and the smaller cover display in order to squeeze the battery. Spend too much time using the big screen, and you'll be hunting for a charger by evening.
OnePlus Open does better, though, in terms of charging. Even if its battery isn't significantly bigger (4,805mAh compared to 4,650mAh), it makes up for it with 67W rapid charging. You can charge to 100% in under 45 minutes. That's much faster than the Pixel, which charges 100% in close to 1 hour 40 minutes.
The OnePlus debut foldable offers only one storage option: 512GB coupled with 16GB of RAM. This should be plenty enough for most users. Google offers more variety in this regard. While the Pixel 9 Pro also has 16GB of RAM, it comes in both 256GB and 512GB variants.
Pricing and Availability
We’ve covered quite a bit in this blog but let’s be real, the price always seals the deal. No surprise then that refurbished phones are increasingly popular. You get premium devices for a fraction of the cost, and quite honestly, who doesn’t love a bargain?
The OnePlus Open in Australia became available in October 2023 for A$2,485. Not bad, considering the first Samsung Fold launched at a staggering US$2,999—way too expensive for a phone that had its fair share of issues.
Flash forward to September 2024, and Google entered the mix with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It was pricier—A$2,699 for the 256GB model, with the 512GB model maxing out at A$2,899. The OnePlus Open with similar storage is winning the price war here.
But it gets better—since the OnePlus Open has been around for a while now, you are sure to catch it at an even better price. So if you're looking for the best value for money, checking out our refurbished OnePlus phones Phones might be the way to go!
Verdict
Picking one of these two phones is no easy choice. Both phones have their perks, so it ultimately comes down to what you value in a smartphone. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is more expensive, but if that doesn’t faze you, then you should just go ahead and grab it. This device has an amazing set of OLED panels (better than its predecessor), versatalie cameras, and advanced AI capabilities. Besides, you can always opt for a refurbished Google Pixel phone which will allow you to enjoy the features you love but for less.
On the flip side, the OnePlus is also a beast in its own right. It sports a massive display, a better battery, a lighter design, and, best of all it’s more affordable. OnePlus really brought it with their first foldable, and it looks like it paid off.
